Stockwood Park returned to winning ways last Saturday with a six try bonus point victory over Northampton Mens Own. Park scored some excellent tries but mixed their scoring with numerous errors and with a high penalty count which far exceeded that of their opponents.
Park’s victory was based very much on the dominance of their three lineout jumpers, Tom Edmunds. Phil Doherty and Will Varnalls. These three eclipsed their opposite numbers and, assisted by accurate throwing from their busy Hooker Tom Childs gave their backs some quick ball to work with. Here, recent recruit Brendon Lewsey in the centre again impressed and winger Charlie Bennett worked hard.
Park started slowly and were on the defensive for much of the first 20 minutes before a collective forward drive saw acting skipper Tom Edmunds touch down for the first try. This was quickly followed by a second try scored by centre Jack Brooks after a sharp break by scrum half Alex Lovell. In a busy last few minutes of the first half, the visitors scored a converted try from their skilful centre before Park added a third try following a flowing team movement, this time through winger Charlie Bennett, to make the halftime score 15-7. Flanker Arron Beattie was prominent throughout for Park.
Park started the second half with purpose and Tom Edmunds was soon on the score sheet again following some excellent teamwork. A try which was converted by Fly Half James Hankey. The next score came from centre Brendon Lewsey after some strong running and when loose head prop Justin Harkin, who had a fine game, scored again it gave Park a 32-7 lead. Park then relaxed as the visitors came back into the game and Park conceded two late tries to finish with a 32 -19 victory.
Next Saturday Park continue their league campaign with a visit to Bedford Queens RFC.
