Despite producing what was probably their most disappointing performance of the season so far, Stockwood Park took what should have been a match winning lead early into injury time at the end of the second half when tight head prop Rob Day crashed over in the corner and Fly Half Brandon Lewsey gave Park a 14-13 lead with an outstanding conversion from the touchline. Unfortunately, promotion chasing Stamford forced their way back into Park’s half and after giving Park a reprieve with a missed penalty kick in front of the posts, they retook possession and with the last move of the game secured victory with a try through their forwards.
The game was not a great spectacle in difficult playing conditions but Park, struggling in the lineout, failed to produce their usual rhythm. They started slowly and allowed the competitive visitors into a 10-0 lead before Full back, James Brennan, joining the line, scored a try which was converted by Brandon Lewsey. Stamford added a Penalty which gave them a 13-7 lead at halftime.
The second half became a dour slog with Park struggling to break out of their own half before the match burst into life through the last few minutes of injury time. Park’s defeat moves them to third place in the league table and this Saturday they travel to Oakham RFC to complete the first half of the season.
Park’s 2nd XV continued their successful run with a 41 – 19 victory over Stamford 2nd XV
