Stockwood Park conceded their first league defeat of the season on the last play of the game in testing conditions at London Road. Park started the match brightly with early pressure rewarded by a Brandon Lewsey penalty in the second minute. Park showed their pace outside after 16 minutes when Sean Martyn made a sharp interception and break and found the speedy Kyran Ryan running a fine line up the middle to sprint in from 40 metres out. Lewsey added the conversion for a 10-0 lead. The visitors came back with a converted try of their own and a further penalty from Lewsey gave Park a 13-7 lead at the interval.
In the second half the bigger visiting pack of forwards began to gain some ascendancy and put Park under pressure, denying them the ball and leading to some uncharacteristic handling errors. Two further tries followed as a result, allowing the visitors to take the lead for the first time after 65 minutes. The lead was short lived however as Park came back and Lewsey made a strong break and forced his way over the line. He converted himself for a 15 point haul. At 20-17 up going into the final minute Park thought they done enough, but a missed touch finder on the last play allowed the powerful Spalding forwards to rumble over from short range for the win.
Next Saturday, Park entertain Handsworth in the quarter final of the RFU Senior Vase at London Road.
